This session is for children aged 1-4, but do keep it really short and simple for under 2’s.
Make sure you read the full session before you start, and check out these practical tips to get the most out of your time together.
We pray you’ll have a wonderful, fun time with your little ones!
We’re learning about Jesus the Storyteller!
Today’s aim is to learn that we can trust in Jesus and build our life on him.
Make it special: You could give everyone in your family a high five and tell them you love them!
WORSHIP (5-6 MINS)
You could use these songs or any of your own favourites!
If you click on the ‘cc’ button (where available) you can see the subtitles to help with the lyrics – results can vary though!
INTRO (8 MIN)
Here’s Sarah with an introduction and story that Jesus told!
EXPLORE THE STORY TOGETHER (3-4 MINS)
Read it again in ‘Stories Jesus Told’ by Butterworth and Inkpen
Or from the bible: Matthew 7:24-27
UNPACK THE STORY (2 MINS)
- Jesus wants us to listen to him and trust in what he says and show us.
- Then our lives will be strong no matter what, just like the house on the rock stood strong.
- You could share what this means for you with your child.
SHOUT OUT (2 MINS)
Say together or repeat after each other, maybe have some actions to do together to help:
WHO CAN I BUILD MY LIFE ON? (pretend to build with your fists)
JESUS! (make a heart shape with fingers or sign ‘Jesus’ touching your palm with the middle finger on other hand)
FUN ACTIVITIES (5-10 MINS)
Explore: Play with any pebbles and shells you may have and talk about how strong and sturdy rocks are. They don’t break or get washed away. We can trust in Jesus – he is like a strong rock!
Play: the story using different kinds of bricks and soft toys/mini people. Help your child to build the two houses and decide how to do the storm. I wonder how each man felt in the storm? I wonder about that strong house… I wonder which is your favourite part of the story…
Sing the ‘The Wise man built his house upon the Rock’ together or watch it here
The wise man built his house upon the rock X3 And the rains came tumbling down
The rains came down and the floods came up X3 And the house on the rock stood still
The foolish man built his house upon the sand X3 And the rains came tumbling down
The rains came down and the floods came up X3 And the house on the sand washed away
Craft: Use the template to cut out the card house and rock and colour in. Then stick them onto card so the house is on the rock. You could draw on the rain, flood, swirly wind and so on.
Activity sheets of the story
Resources: pdf template of activities, scissors, colouring pens, tape/glue, card/paper.
PRAYER TIME IDEAS (5 MINS)
- SHOUT OUT: WHO CAN I BUILD MY LIFE ON? JESUS!
- Thank You! Hold a pebble or a shell as you thank Jesus that he is like a strong rock and we can trust in him. You could pray for your child to learn to hear, see and sense what Jesus says, to trust that he is with them and that loves them all the time!
We’d love to hear from you!
