Remember our top tips for making this work: see more here!
Our aim today is to know that Jesus, the Ultimate Game Changer, gives me courage to do extraordinary things! He is with me and I can learn to keep my eyes on him!
MARK THE MOMENT
Take it in turns to share something you’re looking forward to this week.
WORSHIP (8 MINS)
Let’s celebrate who God is and all he’s done for us!
Intro Video (10 MINS)
Explore the story of Peter (2.5 MINS)
Watch the video below:
Or read about it in
Jesus Calling Bible p182
The Story Traveller’s Bible p231
- Or check it out in the bible: Matthew 14:22-33
Quick Unpack: (2-5 mins) Keep it simple for younger ones!
Jesus did incredible things. He was constantly amazing his followers.
He invited them to join in too and Peter briefly walked on water just like Jesus!
But when he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the waves around him, he began to sink!
Jesus wanted Peter to have faith in him, more than in the waves around him.
What about us? Do we have faith in Jesus?
When do we need courage? How can we look to Jesus and keep our eyes on him?
Share stories of when you’ve had courage together…
Fun Activities: (5-15 mins)
Captain Jesus is Coming Game:
Name areas of your room as port, starboard, bow, stern or simply have ‘in the boat’ and ‘out of the boat’.
Choose some actions for fun sea-themed commands such as:
walk on water, climb the rigging, sharks, man overboard, scrub the deck, submarines, seagulls, land ahoy, pirates, worship Jesus…
All freeze to the call ‘Captain Jesus is coming!’ Take it in turns to be the one shouting the commands!
Play out the story with any toy boats and little people in a washing up bowl or at the next bath time. Wonder about the amazing aspects of this account: I wonder how Jesus could walk on water… How did Peter step out of the boat? I wonder what it felt like with the waves under his feet? What does courage mean to you?
Walking on Water collage: Use some of the shapes on the template. Decorate, cut out and stick onto another piece of card to create your scene. Add on facial expressions and use any different craft materials you have to create the waves and the sky to bring it to life!
Make an origami boat: You’ll need a piece of A4 paper, then watch this video here. You could then decorate it with some of the people from the template or with anything God’s shown you from today’s session.
Have Courage: Be inspired by Matthew 14:27 to make a bookmark or a door hanger or window dangler (with ribbon threaded through the top) to remind you to have courage because Jesus is with you! See ideas on the template.
Matthew 14:27 Jesus quickly spoke to them, “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Resources: Pdf template, scissors, pens, paper/card, tape
Prayer Ideas: (5-10 mins)
- Eyes on Jesus: Pray for each other to keep their eyes on Jesus. You could take it in turns to pray for each family member or all pray at the same time, by laying hands on the person to your right and speaking out your prayers together.
- Have Courage: If you have a toy boat pass it around your family and speak courage over each person when they are holding the boat: Jesus is with you… You can have faith in him… You are Jesus’ forever friend… Jesus is your Game Changer… Have courage… Be open to anything Holy Spirit may be showing you for each other.
