David: Shepherd to King
Remember our top tips for making this work: see more here!
Happy New Year! Welcome back to Game Changers!
Today is the first session in our new series on David, discovering his journey from Shepherd to King!
We are going to learn today that it’s what’s inside us that counts to God! He sees our hearts.
MARK THE MOMENT
Share two things you are looking forward to this week!
WORSHIP (8 MINS)
Let’s be thankful for our wonderful friend, Jesus!
INTRO (10 MINS)
Explore the story more (4 MINS)
Watch: The Teeny Weeny True King (4 mins) – in the video above!
Or read it in:
Jesus Calling Bible p96
Jesus Storybook Bible p116
The Story Travellers Bible p131
Or check it out in the bible: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Quick Unpack: (2-5 mins) Keep it simple for younger ones.
God had chosen David because of his heart for him not how he looked on the outside.
Even though he was young and overlooked by his big brothers and even his dad, David was chosen by God! God had BIG plans for him…
Did you know that God chooses you too. He sees your heart and your hopes and dreams.
Help your older child to see that they don’t have to prove themselves or vie for attention or approval because they already have God’s: His opinion is what really counts!
We can learn to treat others like God does, by asking him to help us see them like he does.
Fun Activities (5-15 mins)
Download this week’s activity sheets here
Guessing Games:
Choose someone to be and take it in turns to do actions for the rest of your family to guess who or what you are!
Some ideas: a bible dude, an animal, a member of your family, a favourite TV character or act out a film/book/bible story/TV programme without making a sound!
TV Interview:
Everyone could choose to be one of the characters from the bible story: a news reporter/interviewer, Samuel, Jesse (the dad), the big brothers, David…
Either be on location at Jesse’s farm or in a ‘studio’, have a pretend microphone, and interview different characters for the local news!
Describe what happened to you? How did you feel? What will you do now?
Create: use the template to make a magnifying glass and write on 1 Samuel 16:7.
Decorate with patterns, stickers and the things God sees in them, or what is important to God such as love, joy, kindness, hope, peacemaker, humility, being open hearted, worshipping him, caring, bravery, forgiveness… You can stick the heart on using sellotape strips and then trim any edges.
In my heart: Either use the template or draw your own heart. Chat about what you see in each other and write these things inside your heart. Or do now for your whole family and stick it up so everyone can see it. Keep adding to it as God shows you more of who you are in his eyes.
BIBLE BITE:
Can you learn this super important Bible verse?
1 Samuel 16:7 ‘God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.’
Find different ways to learn it – say it in silly voices, make it into a rap with actions, write it out in your Adventure Book, find it in your bible and bookmark it, stick it on the fridge…
Challenge each other throughout the week – do you know it yet?
Colouring sheets
Resources: Pdf template, pens, paper/card, glue
Prayer Ideas: (5-10 mins)
It’s an inside job. Pray and speak truth over each other: Have a go at praying and listening to God for each other: ‘Thank you God that you’re always speaking to us and showing us what you think. Help us to hear, see and sense what’s on your heart for __________ now’
Some ideas: how does God sees their heart, what does he love about them, what bible dude are they like, what colour or object does he wants to show you for them…
Share with each other, jot in Adventure Books and pray for them to really know these things! God sees our hearts!
WHAT’S THE GAME CHANGING MOMENT
God sees my heart. He has chosen me and he has BIG plans for me!
SHARE
Show us your magnifying glasses. Do you know the Bible Bite? Can you find this story in your bible?
