David and Jonathan – Best buddies
Remember our top tips for making this work: see more here!
Here is the next session in our series on David as he journeyed from Shepherd to King!
Our aim is to think about what it means to be a great friend, and to pray for our friends.
NEXT SUNDAY will be having a Zoom Call to explore this more!
PROFESSOR BUBBLEPUFF!
Let’s start off with a fun little science lesson…
MARK THE MOMENT
Pass something special around your family (like a favourite toy) and try to be the first to encourage the person who is holding it!
WORSHIP (9 MINS)
Let’s celebrate that Jesus is our best friend!
INTRO (15 MINS)
Watch: David and Jonathan (2.5 mins)
Read:
Jesus Calling Bible p100
Lion First Bible p200
My First Message Bible p140
Or check out these key verses in the bible: 1 Samuel 18:1-9, 1 Samuel 19:1-4, 1 Samuel 20: 12-13, 32-33, 35, 41-42
Quick Unpack: (2-5 mins) Keep it simple for younger ones.
David and Jonathan had an amazingly special friendship!
Jonathan really devoted himself to David as his BEST BUDDY.
He put his friend first! He risked his life and his future to help him.
He wasn’t jealous or proud of him – he loved him!
Remember Jesus is our Best Buddy – he is always ready to love us and to help us love others.
If we are stuck with yucky thoughts or feelings toward others, Jesus will help us.
We can ask him to fill our hearts and minds with his love!
Fun Activities (5-15 mins)
Download this week’s activity sheets here
Game:
Tall Towers:
Give each person in your family the same number of bricks. Set a one minute timer. Then race each other to build the tallest, strongest tower. Whose tower is the best?
Play it again but this time work together rather than against each other.
Which was better? Which game did you enjoy the most? How did the towers work out in each game? Have fun exploring team work!
BIBLE BITE: can you say it yet? Who can say it in the silliest voice?
1 Samuel 16:7 ‘God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.’
Create something for a friend. You could send it in the post or take a photo of it and message them or have an online call to show them!
Card: Design a card for a friend to let them know how important they are to you. You could write inside ‘You’re a great friend because…’ Why not ask God for his thoughts too and jot them in.
Certificate: choose a certificate template or create your own, fill it in and award to your best friend. Make sure you put on why they’re such a great friend!
Friendship wristband: Use the template or design your own wristband to give/send to a friend.
Bible Story Activity Sheets
Resources: Pdf template, bricks, scissors, pens, glue/tape, paper and card, stickers
Prayer Ideas: (5-10 mins)
- Thank You God! Simply thank God for your friends and what you like to do together. Can you do this every day this week? Or pray for your friends – what do they need from Jesus? Speak truths and bible verses as prayers for your friends.
- Just ask Jesus: If you’re stuck with yucky feelings towards a friend or sibling just ask Jesus to help. Tell him how you feel… listen for and sense his love for you and receive it… Ask him to help you to love others with his superpower of love, especially when it is hard… Look for ways to bless and love your friend. Keep checking in with Jesus!
WHAT’S THE GAME CHANGING MOMENT
