Remember our top tips for making this work: see more here.
Today is the next session in our HAPPY HEARTS theme! We will be learning that Jesus wants us to have A TRUE HEART that believes his truth about ourselves, others and God.
MARK THE MOMENT
Say ‘Happy (put thumbs up) Hearts (make heart shape)’ in different voices!
WORSHIP (7 MINS)
Let’s worship our amazing God – he is powerful, loving and always with us!
INTRO (13 MINS)
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT JOSHUA AND CALEB:
Watch: Joshua becomes Leader (3.5 mins)
Jesus Calling Bible p76
Lion First Bible p130
Key verses in the bible: Numbers 13:1-2, 17-33, 14:1-11, 20-24, 30-31
Quick Unpack: (2-5 mins) Keep it simple for younger ones.
Joshua and Caleb had true hearts. They believed what God had said; that he was good and had a great plan for them and all God’s people.
We can have true hearts too. We can chuck out lies and believe God’s incredible truths!
Jesus said the truth would set us free! John 8:32
Here are 2 checks we can do to sniff out any lies, give them to Jesus and get free
1. Does what I am thinking or hearing match up with who Jesus says I am?
2. Does it match up with what it says in the bible?
Fun Activities (5-15 mins)
…and the ‘Happy Hearts Health Chart’ here! (you’ll have it to hand by now, no doubt!)
Spies: Have fun pretending to be Joshua and Caleb creeping around as spies! You could play out the story, or hide something for the ‘spies’ to find or play hide and seek together!
Hot Potato! Use a small ball or bean bag. Pretend it is a hot potato! Quickly pass it to each other. Say that person’s name and a truth about them as you pass it on: ‘_____ Jesus thinks you’re brilliant’, ‘_______ you belong to God’…. Keep it moving!
HAPPY HEARTS HEALTH CHART!
Colour in, cut out and jot a truth on today’s heart. Then stick it onto your chart.
Truth Portrait: Using the template. Choose a frame and draw yourself inside. You could look in a mirror to help draw your features. Cut it out and stick onto card. Then write or draw truths all around your picture. Stick it up to remind yourself of what God thinks of you!
Hand Prints: Either get messy with paint and create hand prints on card or draw around your hand carefully and decorate with paints, chalk, pastels… When it is dry, use a marker to write some key truths about yourself, God and others on each finger.
Chalking! Use chalk to write truths in hearts on the pavement outside your house to encourage your neighbours!
Possible Truths: I belong to God, Jesus’ blood paid for everything, you are precious, I am a child of God, you are wonderful, I can be free from fear, God forgives me, I am loved, I am chosen, my heart is full of Holy Spirit, God has a good plan for me, my family is important to God…
Joshua and Caleb Activity Sheets
Prayer Ideas: (5-10 mins)
- A True Heart: Encourage everyone to get comfy and ask Holy Spirit to show them a lie they are believing. Wait for him to speak. Then ask for the truth to replace that lie. Either go round and pray for each person or pray generally for everyone. Declare freedom from lies, that the truth with set us free and other truths over each other.
- Prophecy time: Can you remember that God wants to tell us good, kind, true things? Let’s listen to him for each other: you could pair up or take it in turns to listen for each family member. You could do this over the week rather than all in one go. Remember God can speak to us in lots of different ways: a movie or picture in our head, thoughts, bible bits, something in the room, our feelings, colours, numbers… Pray and wait, then share what you saw, heard or sensed. Often it is the first thing that pops into our heads. Keep it light and fun with an atmosphere of learning together! We can speak God’s truths to others!!
WHAT’S THE GAME CHANGING MOMENT?
I can have A TRUE HEART that believes God’s truth about myself, others and God!
Share your art with us. Show us your portraits or hand prints. What was God showing you? How does it feel to have a true heart?
